  • Details:It would seem from his service number that when Private Toms was first conscripted, possibly in 1939, he joined the Worcester Regiment, was transferred at some point to the 5th Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment and sometime later to the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders. This may have been on 26 August 1944. As the British Army was badly short of manpower, the 9th (Staffordshire Infantry Division) was chosen to be disbanded and its men transferred to other units to bring them up to strength. The Battalions of the South Staffordshire Regiment were part of this Division.
