Private McAllister would probably have been conscripted in 1940, after his graduation from Glasgow University. His service number suggests that he initially was allocated to the Seaforth Highlanders and at some point, he transferred to the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders and possibly served in North Africa, as part of the 153rd Brigade of the 51st Highland Division and the Eighth Army, and in Sicily prior to the invasion of Europe in 1944. However, the 2nd Battalion Seaforth Highlanders also served in these campaigns.
